adding interest through details

At first glance (the first few pictures), this looks like a basic black A-line dress. Nothing special, nothing fancy, just an average black dress that could lean "LBD", or could lean "plain black sundress."

But, on closer inspection, I've added a few details to make this dress a little more than a plain black dress. This dress has a basket-weave-esque texture, and contouring seams on the front.

And what else did I add to create a little more interest to this black dress? A fancy statement necklace, borrowed from Rocksbox, a black beaded cuff bracelet, black fringe-y sandals, and a rose-gold ring, also borrowed from Rocksbox.

Just a few additions and changes, and you can easily alter the look of a dress, or any outfit. Exhibit A: the last time I wore this dress on the blog - it was to a wedding. And this time, to work.

Had any recent successes wearing and/or styling a piece in several different ways?

This bodycon-ish, midi length dress is a new thing for me. I tend to lean more towards A-line or shift dresses (my wedding dress was four feet wide. true story), so this curve-hugging style is…new

However, I think it packs a lot of punch. So, when wanting to stand out and make an impression, wear a bodycon(ish) dress.

As for the length, I tend to shy away from this length, as it usually makes me and my legs look much shorter and thicker than we (collectively) really are. However, I think it works with this dress – perhaps because the snugness of the dress is a bit lengthening? And nude wedges are always a win.

long time, no see

Hello, friends! I know - world's longest absence from my little blog. I can make all the excuses in the world and delve into where I've been and what I've been doing and why I've been neglecting you, but, I won't.

Instead, I'll just say "I'm sorry. I've been putting other things ahead of my outfit posts. The end."

We good?

Moving right along, I wore this pleated & polka dotted salmon number for a Zeta Alumni event several weeks ago. This is such a juxtaposition of looks, and I LOVE it (look at me growing up! wearing different styles all at once like a boss!).

The sweet pleats & polka dots, the salmon color and the feminine cut.
Paired with the taupe ankle booties and the sparkly statement necklace.
Topped off with my dark hairs (love. still.) and a suede clutch.

I know this look isn't for everyone, but I'm a big fan - I blended several different seasons and looks/feels/vibes into one, rather cohesive, look.
Ya like?

replacement sandals

You guys, a rare day of sunshine. No joke - it's been raining for the past three weeks or so. Flood warnings all over the place, and everything is SO GREEN (except for my hydrangea plant, which died just a few days after it came home, so, that stinks).

And I got some new sandals. I got asked if I really needed them, and my answer is decidedly "YES." I got rid of my brown sandals at the end of last summer, and have been on the outlook for replacements (same with my black sandals - I'd had those bad boys since 2008). I found these tan t-straps with jangly beads on a recent shopping trip with a friend (I also found some black tassel sandals - I'll show you soon!). So, to all you haters who questioned my big girl decision to buy some sandals, I DID need them. And they look goooood.

And that pretty necklace? From Rocksbox. Use the code sweetbananiexoxo for a free month of jewelry rental.

30 for 30: day 21 + day 22

day 21

Nothing TOO crazy over here, but I did manage to dress up a striped sweatshirt by pairing it with black pants and pointy-toe flats. Oh oh, and pretty jewels from Rocksbox! Read more about this set here, and even more about Rocksbox here.

day 22

This outfit seemed so great in my head, but the execution is lacking – the length of the skirt and the ankle booties don’t do my short-girl legs any favors. Oh well – live and learn, right? However, I do really like all of these pieces separately – and sometimes, too much of a good thing is just too too much.

30 for 30: day 17 + day 18

Aaaaah, Sunday. And also the day the Lilly for Target line is released...!!
So, please enjoy these two looks I've put together, and excuse me while I try to snag some Lilly goodies at my local Target store (or the one in the next town over. or the next one).

day 17

I tried to tie in some metallic elements with this all black and white ensemble for a little visual interest - my headband, scarf, jewelry, and the zippers on my booties. Sometime's it's nice to throw in a little metal with a simple outfit to spice it up.

Rocksbox, part two

Remember when I told you about my first set of pretties from Rocksbox a few weeks back?
If not, you can refresh your memory here

Got it?

Now that we're all caught up,  I received my second set of pretties from Rocksbox and
have been wearing them a lot.
Really often.
Almost every day.

Especially the earrings - they're like mini disco balls. And I love 'em.

earrings: Urban Gem Pavé Ball Studs in Gold
And the necklace straddles this perfect line between a delicate necklace, and a statement necklace. Difficult to do, and lovely to behold.

necklace: Gorjana Roya Collar Necklace
bracelet: Margaret Elizabeth Teardrop Bangle in Navy Quartz
I'm on the fence, but these earrings might become part of my permanent collection.
Methinks I need a present after my upcoming race in a few weeks...

in the 3rd person

A few weeks ago, some friends gathered, drank some beer, ate some food, and played some Cards Against Humanity to celebrate someone's birthday. And a great time was had by all.

The above is what one party-goer wore. She was concerned about being cold as the evening wore on, but didn't want to be too warm whilst patio drinking. And somehow, she was able to strike juuuust the right balance. A white v-neck tee, black skirt, boots to keep her feetsies warm, and a chambray to take on and off according to the temperature and her activities.

And those fancy, pretty jewels she's sporting?
From Rocksbox - read more about that here.
