Family Dinner

that's a speakeasy behind me. been there 1 time. and it was neat.

sparkly shoes again! it's not that I WANTED to wear them, but that I HAD to. my heels were covered in blisters from my trip to Vegas, so something without backs were (was?) necessary #truestory
Mama, embarrassed by my lovin'

A few weeks ago, my parents came through town on their way home from Yellowstone. They swung by my work and got the grand tour, then headed downtown, where my Mr. & I met up with them for dinner. They had taken a guided kayaking tour and camped for a few days. They were full of stories of nature, and excitement for their hot showers and REAL bed they had slept in the night before.

They're pretty neat. And they go on cool trips. And SOMETIMES us kids get to go. But SOMEONE in our family has to work, I guess
 *sigh*
I'm a martyr over here, Mom & Dad.
I kid! You know I kid!

I mean, when you've been married (to the same person) for 30+ years, and have built successful careers doing what you love, and have the time AND money, it's totally acceptable to go cool places without inviting your grown children. I'm sure D & I will do the same. Someday.

Sort of related to the above topic, my parents call my brother and I their "bios" (biological children) and our spouses their "golden children" or the "chosen ones." Guess that proves who they like more.
Their daughter-in-law and son-in-law, obviously ;)

aaaaaand, linking up over here today

30 for 30: Day 23 & Day 24

Day 23

So, the first night of our trip, most of my extended family was at dinner. Then my sweet Dad announced to everyone that I have a blog. I turned bright red and mumbled a description to the whole table about how it's "about my clothes, and what I wear..." Shortly after, we headed outside to take my outfit pictures. My brother & uncles knocked on the windows since they could see us, and this is me waving back. Cue red face.

hamming it up for my photographer for the week: my Dad. we're  besties. true story.

So, my Dad spilled the beans on my blog. Not that it was a big secret, but it's awkward to just tell people you know and love "So, I write things on the internet and post pictures of myself." So I guess I'm glad my Dad just blurted it out to everyone - I gained AT LEAST 3 new readers. Hi family!!!

Day 24

that is a fish. jumping. RIGHT BEHIND ME.

our view for the week. I love my mountains but this is nice, too :)

me & Dad

I taught him how to pose like a sorority girl: skinny arm & head tilt. However, he didn't get the memo to hold his drink out of the picture...next time?

this is me wearing my brother's size 14 flip flops. I get a kick out of it...

A few more tidbits about my family reunion trip are headed your way, and of course, the rest of the my 30 for 30 challenge. I'm not too original with what's left, but packing everything in a carry-on really limited my options. #firstworldproblems

Daddy-O

Just got a phone call that my Dad follows my little newbie blog. And he thinks I'm funny! That's what I've been trying to tell him since I could talk...

He also told me he didn't realize I'm such a little fashionista. I'm not sure how this is "news," since we would spend HOURS (seriously, HOURS) picking out my clothes for elementary school in the morning. For example:

A: "Daaaaad, I have nothing to wear. Will you help me pick something out?"

Dad: "What about this dress with these shoes?"

A: "Mmm, I can't stand that."

Dad: "What about these pants and this blouse?"

A: "Eh. They don't match."

Dad: "Sure they do! They're the same color!"

Repeat.

At least 4 times. Occasionally more.

And also, my closet first grew exponentially in HIS house - there never seemed to be enough room for all my finds. Once my brother went away to college, I started using HIS closet across the hall to store some clothes...the truth comes out...

And for Easter one year when I was little, my Dad was in charge of taking me dress shopping. Easy, right? We came home with a new dress, matching hat, gloves, socks, shoes, and an Easter basket. We got home and my Mom asked "Why did you buy all of this?" and my Dad replied "She said she needed it." Proof I've been a fashionista/diva since my youth ;)

Thanks for your patience, love, and understanding, Dad!
Like I keep telling you, you're a shoo-in for the Dad Of The Year Award ;)

We did it!

My Dad & I at the race expo the day before our half-marathon.
"running"

We did it! We ran 13.1 miles!

We started together, and we finished together (and ran the whole thing together, of course). Our time was 2:37:07, with an average pace of an 11:59 mile. We stopped twice - once for me to put on a blister band-aid, and the other to use the restroom and apply another blister band-aid. We slowed at the aid stations for water & Gatorade. Somewhere (maybe mile 9?) I asked if we could walk for about 100 yards. My dad said "Um, no!" and I'm so glad he did , because I can proudly say I ran the entire race!

We got on a bus to take us up to the start at about 5 AM, got to the start about 5:45, and started the race at 6:30. It was a mostly downhill course, with a few tiny uphill areas - we ran down a canyon and into town. There was a marathon, 10K & 5K, in addition to our half marathon. The first marathoner to finish passed us around mile 10 or 11, and finished 7 or 8 minutes before us - he wasn't even breathing hard! He made it look so easy! I can't believe he can run 26.2 miles in less time than it took me to do half that distance. My mom & my Mr. cheered us on and saw us around mile 9, and again at the finish. Then took us out to breakfast, then home for naps.

I took the day off work today and got a sports massage - so glad I did. My feet are torn up with blisters, and my legs are incredibly sore & stiff, but I'm so glad I completed the race and didn't walk! It was fun & exciting, but I'm glad it's over. I told my Dad we should talk in a week or so about doing another one eventually. We've thrown around ideas of doing a half marathon at all the major beaches/coasts/oceans - Key West being first on our list (the land of Jimmy Buffett - we're HUGE Parrotheads).

My apologies for the lack of Mr. Picks Monday this week - since I didn't go to work today, I didn't put on anything fancier than yoga pants. I hope you'll forgive me!
Minutes after we finished - FINISH line in the background.
