May Outfit Recap

This was May for me and my little blog. We started with snow and ended with green green grass. And now we're into summer. But are we though? Really? The weather seems to be all over the place. I sound like a broken record, dontcha know?

Maybe this is just me, but I have a hard time transitioning from winter/spring to spring/summer. Not in the way you'd think. Just hear me out. I LOVE summer - love love LOVE it! But, every year, without fail, I forget how hot it can get. I try to wear layers like I did all winter, and then I'm roasting. It takes me a few weeks to remember that I don't need to wear 800 layers - really, more than 2 is too many. Same issue as we head into colder weather. I wear a light jacket and forget how cold it can get. It's not that I have a short memory, or am unfamiliar with changing weather. I think I just get so used to layering and trying to dress warmly that I forget how to dress for hot weather. Anyways, don't worry - I will figure it out. Eventually. I don't need counseling or meds, but maybe some flashcards? I kid.

Anyhoo, I repeated some items and wore some for the first time this season, and some for the first time ever. Any critiques/ideas/challenges for me? Remember, I am doing 30 for 30, but that will (eventually) end and when it does, I'll have access to my whole closet. I'm not sure yet how to feel about that - it's so full that sometimes it's pretty overwhelming...

UPDATE
Sorry friends, but there will be no Mr. Picks Mondays during my 30 for 30. He told me it's not that he doesn't like the 30 items I've picked out, but they don't provide him with a lot of "inspiration." So we'll pick back up with our regularly scheduled programming in July. Hope you'll still stick around!

Our First Wedding Anniversary

We're spending our first wedding anniversary in the mountains, and it's been so great to get away for just a wee bit and focus on each other. I know we don't have babies or jobs that require 60+ hours a week, but it's nice to get away to a place we both know and love, without any responsibilities, pups to take care of, work to do, or places to be.

We got massages in the morning, then made a stop for crêpes - a favorite treat of ours. We painted some pottery, took some naps, ate delicious food, and relished our time together.

there was a real live moose right outside our building!
Here's a little trip down memory lane...

D, at the risk of over-sharing on the interwebs, I love you, my wonderful husband. And I can't wait to spend forever with you.

30 for 30: Day 1

just a nice, refreshing glass of Riesling on a sunny Colorado afternoon

jumping for joy - we've been married for one whole year! best year of my life :D

We're celebrating our first wedding anniversary in the mountains of Colorado. My lovely parents have a condo that they rent out, and they graciously agreed to let us stay for our anniversary. Fitting, since we stayed here for a few days right after our wedding for our "mini-honeymoon" (we went on our cruisin' honeymoon over last Christmas).

Packing for this wee getaway was a snap, since I only had so many items to choose from, and it is always cooler in the mountains than where we live, so pants and layers it was. Hooray for easier packing (I HATE packing, and it takes me forever - trust me)!

I like this outfit I put together, except for the shoes. Or if I just did the chambray, pants & shoes, then I think I'd like the pastel colors on bottom. Oh well, these were the best walking shoes I chose for this challenge, and we planned to do lots of walking, so, pastel pink shoes it is.

30 for 30

For the month of June, I'll be completing a challenge - 30 for 30. Perhaps you've heard of it? The idea is to choose 30 items of clothing & shoes, and wear only those items for 30 days, creating tons of outfits and remixing outfits I might not normally put together. As I've mentioned before, I have a lot of clothes. A LOT. My goal in completing this challenge is to help myself realize I don't need tons of pieces I like - instead, I should pare down my closet to keep the pieces I LOVE. And these pieces should get worn a lot and be able to be worn with lots of other items. So, instead of many many pieces that only get worn a few times a year, I want to focus on having less pieces that get worn often and reflect me, and are also flattering and make me feel good (and excited!) about getting dressed.

I originally saw the 30 for 30 idea on A Pretty Penny almost 2 years ago, and then on Kendi Everyday. And a BUNCH of bloggers completed this last month, which was the push of inspiration I needed to complete it myself. So, here I go!

Here are the items I've chosen:

3 skirts
L to R: from a clothing swap with a friend; Nordstrom & Nordstrom

3 tank tops
L to R: Old Navy; Forever 21 via Plato's Closet; Kohl's

1 pair of capris & 2 pairs of shorts
L to R: Kohl's; Maurice's via Plato's Closet; Old Navy

2 pairs of pants
L to R: Kohl's; Old Navy via Goodwill

3 dresses
L to R: ARC; Target; Macy's

6 tops
L to R: thrifted; Target; from someone at work; from an old roommate; JCPenney; Express

6 pairs of shoes
L to R: WalMart; DSW; Sears; DSW & DSW; Macy's

4 jackets/sweater
L to R: ARC; clothing swap; Macy's; from a friend

A few things I've come up with before I head down this remixing road:
1) I can use unlimited accessories to change up my look.
2) If inclement weather arrives and I need to wear additional outerwear on top of my outfit, that's OK.
3) If an item is pretty sheer or needs a basic tank underneath, I can wear one.
4) We're attending at least 1 wedding this month and I'll be attending 1 wedding shower. The items I've picked out aren't what I plan to wear to either event, so I plan to wear my 30 for 30 items before or after, and change into something more appropriate for the wedding or shower. I didn't think it was reasonable to include a dress for a wedding in my 30 items, as it would only get worn once.

Lunch Lady Chic?

This top - what do we think? I bought it (thrifted) last summer with high expectations - "It'll go so well with shorts or skinnies, as a light flowy blouse." Yet, whenever I wear it, I can't decide if it's cute, or makes me look like a lunch lady. Nothing wrong with being a lunch lady, but I work in an office. And I pack my own lunch (most of the time - unless there's Asian or Mexican on the horizon, then all bets are off), so there's no need for a lunch lady, really.

The fate of this top rests with you: if it's cute/flowy/looks nice/is worth hanging on to, let me know and I'll keep it. If you think it makes me look older & more boxy than my 20-something years, let me know and out it goes. No pressure.

Also, today I'm linking up with Coffee Beans and Bobby Pins and FACE IT Catalog for their Friday's Five Linkup, which is pretty neat.

Hope you have a great weekend! My Mr. and I will be celebrating our first wedding anniversary - I can't believe our big day was (almost) 1 year ago! Also, interested in seeing some pictures from our wedding and and/or some throwbacks from our dating days, beginning in 2005?

Shirt: thrifted
Pants: Old Navy via Plato's Closet
Sandals: Born Concept
Earrings: Claire's (crowns for ZTA!)
Necklace: from our cruisin' honeymoon

Twirling

I'm convinced that skirts & dresses were made for twirling

I wore this outfit to start off our Memorial Day Weekend. We laid low, saw some friends, lounged, and caught up on some sleep (and laundry, too). It was just what I needed - starting this coming weekend our summer is pretty full with weddings, parties, trips, and all the other elements of a fun summer.

I found this skirt at Goodwill. I'm sure it wasn't intended to be a maxi skirt, but when you're short like me, you can pull this off. For example, my mom was hesitant to order my first dress from Lilly Pulitzer a few birthdays back, because the dresses looked to short to her online. But then I reminded her that the models were all probably much taller than 5'8", and I'm only 5'4", so really, what hit them above the knee would probably be below my knees - maybe even to my ankles. Ankles was a bit of an exaggeration, but the length was perfect for my short legs!

On another note, I need to remember to not pair these sandals with this skirt - the hem of the skirt kept catching on my sandals every time I took a step. Grrr.
