30 for 30: day 4

All day in this outfit I felt unprepared and a wee bit confused. At one point, I was afraid I’d underdressed and kept thinking that I should have worn pants and a sweater (and another scarf and a jacket and a parka...) because it was so chilly out. Cut to a few hours later, and I was questioning WHY I’d worn tights – the sun was out, and the wind had died down. This cycle then proceeded to repeat itself for the entire day.

However, by the end of it (hot, cold, hot, and then cold again), I think I hit the nail on the head, making me sure of a few things:

1) I'm dressing appropriately for my climate

2) I'm dressing appropriately for my lifestyle
(mine happens to be a casual office environment, with a lunch date thrown in for good measure)

3) I'm a true Colorado fashionista – layers, boots, sandals, shorts, snow, dresses, sweaters, scarves, and 90 degree temps, all in the span of a day.

Welcome to spring in the Rockies!

sunny sunday blues

You guys, I've had a great Sunday. I slept in, went on a great run with my best friend (so many endorphins! I didn't want to die! we only walked for about half a minute! the sun was out! there was a breeze!), caught up with my bestie, had bacon and eggs and coffee, played with my pups outside. We might have a long-boarder among our canine companions - the verdict is still out. He drags it backwards, and also tries to bite it. Maybe he thinks it's alive? Either way, it's very entertaining. And he is now pooped. So, that's a win.

In other news, this outfit. This top is actually two tank tops. The top is a sheer blue button-up chiffon deal, and the bottom is a navy blue star print ribbed tank. I thought it might be a fun way to subtley (quietly? demurely?) add some print to this blue, green and gray ensemble. And it's since made me look for a few more sheer/chiffon items to style in the same way. So far I've got a green floral top... Aaaand, I think that's it. So, stay tuned and maybe I'll come up with something. If not, you'll see this combination again. And would that be so terrible?

Hope your Sunday is pretty great, just like mine has been :)

monday does it again

At the risk of sounding like a broken record, or a tugboat tooting my own horn, or Kanye singing his own praises, this outfit is another one that just came another in the early morning (yesterday did, as well). This look has a few different elements that, when combined, form a cohesive (and dare I say, classy?) look.

First up is the colorblocking with the navy top half, and the wine-colored pencil skirt. Colorblocking works best when the 2 colors are of the same saturation, or level, of color. So, a deep wine color, and a rich navy blue work here. Or a deep emerald with another equally deep and rich jewel-tones (see some of my past not-so-great colorblocking looks over here...).

Next is the monochromatic layers up top - the navy blue button-up under the navy blue vest.
The third is tying together the boots with the necklace and scarf. Cognac meets brown paisley and brown + gold - not matchy-matchy, yet coordinating and pulled together. And lastly, I wore a necklace under the scarf so that if/when I took off the scarf and vest (which I did), my outfit would still look complete, and not like it was missing some element.

sassy

Just in case I haven't made it clear before, I love my Frye boots and wearing them with dresses or skirts. Without tights. It feels so sassy and fun. And almost like I'm getting away with something - like cheating winter and its subsequent snow and gross weather.

It DOES help to wear a warm dress when foregoing tights in winter - this sweatshirt dress from J. Crew Factory has a great fleece-y lining, and since it's such a nice basic color, pairs with just about any scarf in my closet.

in like a lion

On this, the first Monday of March 2015, I have two outfits to share with you (just like last week). They both feature a sweater, skinnies and flats. Oh oh, and stripes. Always stripes.

It's impossible to discern, but those pants and flats are navy blue, not black. And my necklace, too. But that is a bit easier to see. The stripes in the sweater can lean gray, black or blue, so I chose to pull out the blue on this particular day. And then blue'd up everything else with my pants, shoes and jewelry. Perfect for a long day of meetings.

Cream and green and stripes and python. I tend to shy away from a big chunky scarf and chunky sweater together in the same outfit - it normally feels like too much volume, warmth and potential static for my hair. But this chunky scarf and sweater worked together. I think because I kept the rest of my outfit simple, and you know, it's winter. And winter calls for scarves and sweaters to keep you warm.

stealing beanies

This beanie is stolen.

No, not from a store, or from a merchant. It's bought and paid for, with a receipt and everything

BUT

I did steal it from someone in my family. I had ski hair, I was cold, and I liked the new beanie:
it's navy blue (*swoon*), warm, doesn't make me look bald like most beanies, and has a Colorado flag on it. Not sure if it will ever get back to its rightful owner...

indigo pants + sweater #30

It's tough to see, but I'm wearing a pink button up shirt under that white cable knit sweater. And these pants. Let's talk about these pants for a hot minute.

They're navy blue.
They're skinnies.
They're stretchy.
They fit like a glove.
All of the above are good things,

BUT...

They're also some special indigo dye, and they have been rubbing off on whatever I wear them with. By the end of the day, this sweater was turning a wee bit blue on the sleeves and around my waist/hips. So, that's frustrating. However, I'm supposed to wash them by themselves the first few times, then I should be ok.

We'll see.

The price of fashion, my friends.
The things I do for the pants I love.

black & blue + sweater #29

The day I wore this, one of the girls I work with was also wearing a blue top with black pants and a black sweater. And you guys, this top isn't just blue. It's navy blue. With black.

Dun dun dun.

Breaking all the rules over here in sunny Colorado.
